The miniHome on tour in Philadelphia, from Dwell Magazine
Instant cottage!
It is a design classic, and the only one ever built. The miniHome Solo is solar and wind powered, a complete off-grid, self-sustaining year round machine for living. Designed by Andy Thomson of Altius Architecture, it was built to the highest standards without compromise. The miniHome is summering in Dorset, Ontario, and is available for immediate delivery and occupancy.
All materials and finishes were chosen to be VOC free and mould resistant, easy to clean and maintain. Walls are thermosteel panels, custom made solid insulation. It has solar power, wind power, everything you need for comfortable off-grid (or island) living.
Complete with dual flush toilet, gray and black water tanks, full kitchen with propane powered fridge and stove, microwave and richlite counters.
"Quite possibly the world's first, completely self-sufficient, ecological trailer design, the miniHome features many of the 'mod-cons' that consumers have come to expect, without the associated energy, resource or material use. Within a well-organized 38 sm (350 sf), there is everything you need for comfortable, year-round, sustainable living.
Designed for a 50-year life expectancy, the miniHome offers the possibility for year-round, affordable living on almost any site. It is equally at home in a remote, wilderness setting – completely off-grid – or in an urban trailer park. Its remarkably sustainable combination of energy efficient systems and beautiful finishes usually associated with luxury condominiums results in a home that sings the virtues of simplicity and conservation."
I fell in love with the miniHome at first sight and thought that I might build a business around it, have moved on to other things and need sell it. It needs a good home where it will be treasured as a design icon. Original construction cost was $ 150,000; It was recently reclad in Fundermax for greater longevity; I am offering it for sale at $ 100,000 or best offer.

The SOLO has been featured in hundreds of blogs, magazines, TV and Radio programs and numerous books on compact and environmental construction, and has become a poster-child for the small homes movement. The SOLO design was recently honoured with Canada’s 2008 Design Exchange Awards for Residential Interior Design.
